All New X-Men #14
writer- Brian Michael Bendis
artist- Stuart Immonen
Oh please, another X-title? Here's the
main idea behind All New X-Men. Dr. Henry McCoy, the Beast, goes
back in time to the 1960's. His goal is to bring the original X-men
(Cyclops, Beast, Angel, Marvel Girl, and Ice Man) to the present day,
where Cyclops has killed Professor Xavier and declared a Mutant
Revolution in order to preserve his mentor's original dream. What
McCoy wants, is for the young Cyclops to confront the modern version
and shock some sense back into the former leader of the mutant hero
team.
I could make this review short with the
simple line, “written by Brian Michael Bendis and illustrated by
Stuart Immonen.” Really, is there anything these guys do that
isn't perfect? Whatever BMB does becomes a legend and Immonen's
artistic style has only been getting better and better since his work
on Superman in 1994. The only thing that made me resistant to it was
the fact that it's one of a big pile of X-Titles already on the
shelves. But it is different than the rest, even when it brings us
to the old phrase “history repeats itself.”
In All New X-Men #14, the X-Men are
faced with a horror from some of the best X-Men comics ever written.
The young Jean Grey is manipulated by the daughter of Mastermind, and
apparently transforms into Dark Phoenix. Talk about a sore subject.
In a knee jerk reaction, Wolverine tries to skewer her to be sure
what happened in the past doesn't happen again. Don't you worry, he
doesn't kill Jean Grey. But I'm not going to tell you any more than
that on the subject. I will tell you that there is a great battle
between the X-Men teams and the newest version of an old evil mutants
team. Mystique, Sabretooth, Mastermind, and Silver Samurai put up a
good fight and take me back to the days of John Byrne and Chris
Claremont.
Trust me when I say that if you only
read one X-Men book, you should make it this one. When it comes to
my comics of choice, I'll make mine Marvel. This is “Big Bob”
Hefler for Comic Reviews Outside The Cube.
See you on the outside.
